This class is offered on Outschool.
Although it’s a long way from “5 Nights at Freddy’s,” Edgar Allan Poe is just as fun and horror-filled. We will read Edgar Allen Poe’s poem, “The Raven” together as a class. In our first session we will explore unfamiliar vocabulary, read the poem together, and look at the many allusions in the poem. In our second session we will look at the gothic/horror motifs, talk about poetic elements such as internal and external rhyme, line length, meter, alliteration etc.), and the ways in which the poem parallels Poe’s life. Students will have the opportunity to create their own poems and share if they feel comfortable.
No student preparation or out-of-class work is required as the poem will be on a slideshow. We’ll enjoy a couple of short video clips to help gain background information on Poe’s life and to explore ways that the Raven has shown up in popular media. Most of the class will be taken up with a teacher-led discussion of the poem, its themes, ideas, and poetic element.
I can’t wait to explore Poe with your learner. If they are interested in reading more of his poems and short stories, feel free to join us for “Haunting Poetry” or “Grotesque Gothic.”
